The unemployment in December descends in all the municipalities of the region of Cartagena (03/01/2019)

The total number of unemployed in the region of Cartagena in December 2018 was 28,280 people (see table 1).

This represents a decrease of 875 unemployed compared to the month of November (see table 2), 3.0% less (see table 3).

Unemployment fell in the services sector (-3.5% less than in November) and in agriculture (-7.7%), although it increased in the industry sectors (+ 5.0%) and construction (+ 2.2%).

By municipalities, the number of unemployed fell in all of the region of Cartagena.

The largest percentage reductions in the number of unemployed in December occurred in San Pedro del Pinatar (-6.9%), San Javier (-6.3%), Fuente Álamo (-5.2), Los Alcázares (-4 , 6%), Torre-Pacheco (-4.2%) and Mazarrón (-3.2%).

By sex and age, unemployment increased in the region of Cartagena among men older than 44 years but was reduced in the rest of the groups.

Especially notable is the fall in unemployment among those under 25 years of age in the month of December (-10.0% in men and -9.4% in women).

The percentage reduction in registered unemployment during the month of December 2018 in the region (-3.0%) was higher than that experienced in December 2017 (-2.2%) and, above all, the average of the months December of the last 10 years (+ 0.4% for the period 2008-2017).

Therefore, at the county level, this month of December was more positive than the months of December tend to be in terms of unemployment falls.

At the municipal level, San Pedro del Pinatar, San Javier, Fuente Álamo, Los Alcázares, Mazarrón and La Unión stand out positively in this time comparison, where the month of December 2018 was better in percentage terms than in 2017 and the average of the months of December of the last ten years.

In Torre Pacheco and Cartagena, the reduction in unemployment in December 2018 was slightly lower in percentage terms than in December 2017, but better than usual in the months of December during the last decade.

With respect to the same month of the previous year, December 2017, the number of registered unemployed in the region of Cartagena decreased by 2,066 people (see table 4), which represents a decrease of 6.8% (see table 5).

This reduction is one percentage point higher than at the regional level and 0.7 percentage points higher than the interannual variation in the region in November 2018. In year-on-year terms, unemployment decreased in December in all sectors, especially in construction ( -11.6%) and in services (-6.6%).

Therefore, the last twelve months as a whole can be described as positive in terms of reducing unemployment in the region of Cartagena.

By municipalities, and always in interannual terms, the number of unemployed decreased in all of the region, with the highest percentage reductions in Torre-Pacheco (-15.0%), San Javier (-11.9%) and Fuente Álamo (-8.6%).

By sex and age, unemployment decreased with respect to December 2017, especially in the age group between 25 and 44 years (-12.0% in men and -10.3% in women at the county level), but it increased among women over 44 years old (+ 0.5%).

In seasonally adjusted terms, registered unemployment in the region decreased by 186 people in December 2018 compared to November 2018 (see figure 2), which represents a drop of 0.7%.

This decline confirms that the good data of unemployment reduction in December is not only caused by seasonal effects.

In seasonally adjusted terms, the number of unemployed in December 2018 is the lowest in the region of Cartagena since April 2009.

Registered seasonally adjusted unemployment decreased in all municipalities in the region in December 2018 compared to November (see figure 3), especially in San Pedro del Pinatar (-4.0%), San Javier (-2.6%), Fuente Álamo (-2.0%), Mazarrón (-1.6%) and Los Alcázares (-1.0%).

Approximate rate of registered unemployment

The approximate rate of registered unemployment (TAPR) of the region with data for November 2018 remained at 19.3% in October, but fell 1.6 percentage points (pp) with respect to November 2017 (see figure 4).

The TAPR increased with respect to October in La Unión (+1.0 pp), Mazarrón (+0.6 pp), San Pedro del Pinatar (+0.5 pp), Los Alcázares (+0.3 pp), Cartagena (+0.1 pp) and San Javier (+0.1 pp), while it fell in Torre-Pacheco (-0.9 pp) and Fuente Álamo (-0.1 pp).

The Union is still the municipality that presented the highest TAPR in the region (38.6%), followed by San Pedro del Pinatar (22.9%) and Cartagena (21.6%).

The smallest TAPRs in the region were found in Fuente Álamo with 9.6% and Torre-Pacheco with 10.7%.

The TAPR of the region of Cartagena stood 3.8 percentage points above that of the region, which decreased one tenth to 15.5%.

Signed contracts

The total number of contracts signed in the region of Cartagena in December 2018 was 25,900 contracts (see table 6).

This means a reduction of 3,733 contracts compared to the month of November (see table 7), 12.6% less (see table 8).

This decrease is mainly caused by the lower number of contracts signed in the agriculture sector (2,006 contracts less than in November, 10.8% less), but also due to the drop in hiring in the other sectors.

It should be noted that the signing of contracts in the construction sector was reduced by almost 40% compared to November.

By municipalities, the number of contracts signed decreased in almost all of the region except in San Pedro del Pinatar (+ 18.6%), due to the increase in hiring in agriculture and the service sector.

The largest percentage drops in the number of contracts signed in December were in Los Alcázares (-25.5%), Fuente Álamo (-21.2%), La Unión (-21.2%) and Cartagena (-15, one%).

To put into context the variation in the number of contracts signed in the month of December in the region of Cartagena, the percentage reduction of this month (-12.6%) is lower than the decrease observed in December 2017 (- 17.3%, see figure 5).

It is also lower than the average fall in hiring in the months of December of the last ten years (-14.7%).

The percentage increase in the hiring in San Pedro del Pinatar during a month traditionally negative for the signing of new contracts is highlighted in the graph.

With respect to the same month of the previous year, December 2017, the number of contracts signed in the region of Cartagena in December 2018 increased by 4,974 contracts (see table 9), up 23.8% (see table 10).

This increase is ten percentage points higher than at the regional level.

In year-on-year terms, the number of contracts signed in the region grew in almost all sectors except construction (-5.6%).

By municipalities, and always in year-on-year terms, the number of signed contracts increased percentage-wise in almost all but La Unión (-10.5%).

The highest inter-annual growth rates in hiring were located in San Javier (+ 60.0%), San Pedro del Pinatar (+ 30.9%) and Cartagena (+ 29.2%).
